NRTC Releases New Video Resource for Employers: Questions About Vision Loss

The National Research and Training Center on Blindness and Low Vision (NRTC) is offering a new self-paced interactive video to human resource managers who have questions about hiring people with vision loss. Titled Questions About Vision Loss, this educational video is available for 1 or 1.5 hours of Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) professional development credit.

Video presenter Sylvia is sitting on an armchair with her hands in her lap in a brightly lit studio.
Video presenter Sylvia is talking about braille use while sitting in an armchair. Viewers can select low vision topics like braille in the interactive video.

This one-hour video is built around the questions managers ask about employing and working with people who are blind or have low vision (B/LV). The video begins with a short introductory module providing foundational information about this population. From there, viewers can explore 42 commonly asked questions, selecting those that are most relevant to them across three main topic areas: Employment-Related Questions, General Questions, and Curiosity Questions.

In the Employment-Related Questions section, users can explore topics such as:

  • The kinds of jobs people with vision loss do
  • How to conduct accessible interviews
  • Addressing concerns about workplace accommodations
  • The benefits of hiring individuals with vision loss
  • How people with vision loss commute to work

The General Questions section answers questions related to:

  • Facts about blindness and vision loss
  • How people who are B/LV manage daily activities
  • Desire for assistance

The Curiosity Questions section explores questions people are often interested in but not comfortable asking, such as:

  • How people with B/LV experience dreams
  • Enjoyment of typical entertainment such as movies, TV, and sports
  • Navigating new environments
  • The hardest thing about being blind

To earn SHRM credit, viewers must watch at least 50 minutes of video content and complete brief pre- and post-video quizzes. For those willing to participate in an optional research study, a more detailed set of questions is included with the opportunity to earn 1.5 hours of credit.

Whether you're an HR manager or want to learn more about inclusive hiring, this video is an excellent resource to increase your confidence in hiring people with vision loss.
